A painting tells a story. A plein air study regails a moment that has just arrived and never will be just so again. Clouds billow and disperse, light falls upon a mountainside--then travels on, or shimmers fleetingly on the surface of a pond. Colors tell the tale of weather and season; the viewer is drawn to the peaceful respite of water's edge or the daring adventure of a mountaintop. Plein air painting is the rush and tumble of brushstrokes and surprises, while studio painting is the careful evolution of a plot. Characters arrive with mysterious import, landscapes evolve with dangerous beauty—the final pageant scarcely resembling the initial germ of an idea. For the artist, there are no guarantees, for the viewer, no words; each must find the story within. Marion teaches drawing and painting at the Art Center of the Capital Region. |
