Art for the Non-artist

I am not an artist. I am, however, a proud crafter. But, I do know the value of art.

Science can be beautiful with its precision. But art lets you express your feelings. Uptight? Want to throttle your boss or loved one? Take out some paint and a canvas or even some crayons or pencils and let loose. Why do you think there are so many adult coloring books out there now? Just the physical motion of coloring drops the blood pressure.

Or, look at a favorite painting. If you can’t get to a museum, check out the virtual museums. Like classical? Or modern? They are there for you perusal. I’ve spoken with people who see a photograph and say “I remember when I went there…” Oh, I love those falls…” and they are instantly transported back to another, perhaps happier, time. That is the value of local artists. They share some of the same favorite memories and places in their work.

Check out local shows. Meet the artists. It’s a great opportunity. And, as a blatant advertisement – Choose Cohoes for Art has an artists’ showcase coming up at their new home at 60 Remsen St., Cohoes, in August. It’s an opportunity to meet the artists, see their works and, it’s free admission. You can’t beat it. Stay tuned for more details on their website – www.ChooseCohoesForArt.org and on their Facebook page under Choose Cohoes for Art.
